About the Office

The Chouteau County Attorney’s Office serves the public by representing both Chouteau County and the State of Montana in criminal and civil matters. The office is responsible for prosecuting crimes, providing legal guidance to County leadership, and handling the County’s legal affairs.

Functions

The County Attorney’s Office carries out a wide range of legal duties, including:

  • Prosecuting felony cases in District Court

  • Prosecuting misdemeanor cases in Justice Court

  • Handling juvenile cases in Youth Court

  • Representing the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services in child welfare cases

  • Managing petitions for involuntary mental health commitments

  • Assisting other jurisdictions as a special prosecutor when needed

  • Requesting investigative subpoenas related to potential criminal activity
